Adding a blog to your WordPress website is a great way to increase your online presence and engage with your audience. Whether you're a blogger, business owner, or simply looking to share your thoughts with the world, WordPress makes it easy to get started.

What are WordPress Posts?

WordPress Posts are a type of content in the WordPress platform that allows you to create and publish individual articles or entries on your website. Posts are typically displayed in reverse-chronological order, with the newest post appearing at the top of the page. They can be categorized and tagged to help organize content, and can include a variety of media such as text, images, videos, and audio.

WordPress Posts are an essential feature for bloggers, journalists, and content creators who want to share their thoughts, ideas, and stories with their audience in a structured and organized way.

Introduction to WordPress Posts Screen

Familiarizing yourself with the WordPress Posts screen is a crucial step before getting started.

To access it, simply hover over the Posts option on your WP admin dashboard and click on it. Or you can click on All Posts from its Submenu.

You will be taken to the home screen of Posts, where you'll see several key elements. Check out the image below for a general overview.

  1. Under the Title column, you'll see all of your existing posts. Click on any post to access its screen and start editing.

  2. The Author column displays which user created each post.

  3. Categories are short descriptors that you can add to your posts. They appear under the Categories column.

  4. Tags are single words or phrases that you can include in your posts. They help readers and admins find the right posts and appear under the Tags column.

  5. The Comment column shows notifications about reader comments on your posts.

  6. The Date column displays the last working date and time for each post. You can sort posts in ascending or descending order by clicking the Date option.

  7. If you want to edit or delete multiple posts at once, use the Bulk Actions option.

  8. Use the Filter option to sort posts by date or category.

  9. The Search box lets you search for any existing post on your website. It's especially useful if you have many posts and can't find the one you need right away.

How to Add a Blog Post to WordPress

You can create a new blog post easily from your WP admin dashboard. There are two ways to create a new blog post.

In the first method, hover over the Posts from the sidebar and click on Add New.

In the second method, you can go to the Posts screen from the WP admin dashboard and click on Add New from the upper left corner.

When a new blog post screen pops up, you will see a specific portion for the title and the description. In the description part, you can add different types of blocks to make your post more engaging and informative.

Click on any of the symbols indicated in the image below to open the blocks and patterns menu. You can browse and search your desired blocks and patterns from here. Hovering over these block icons will show you their features in a brief text.

When you click on each block you create, a menu bar will automatically appear with many functionalities. You can change paragraph heading and pattern, drag, move any block up and down, align text, embed links, and do other things from this menu.

If you need to insert a new block between two existing blocks, then all you have to do is keep your mouse pointer in between two of your created blocks. A straight line with a plus symbol will appear. Click on the plus sign, and it will show you the option to add a new block here.

A post can’t be completed without its author's detail, publication status, visibility, and more. You can find and change them by clicking the Settings symbol in the top right corner.

Scroll down this settings menu, and you will find other essential elements related to posts, like adding categories, tags, including featured images, and more.

Finally, you need to publish the post so everyone can see it, or you can save it as a draft to edit it and publish it later. You will find both options in the screen's top right corner. There is also a Preview option here where you can see what it would look like after publishing.

How to Organize Posts With Categories and Tags

Posts will be published in bulk. You have to keep them organized otherwise both you and your readers will get confused about them.

Categories and Tags are two features available in WP admin dashboard that can help you to organize posts on your website. Before learning how to add Categories and tags to your post, let's learn about what they are.

Category

Categories can be defined as high-level descriptors about the topic of the post. For example, you might run a book-related blog site. In this case, your categories might be "Thriller", "Mysteries", "Drama," etc.

Tag

Tags are single words or short phrases that can describe a specific post. Suppose you are writing about how to take care of books. The tags might be "book care" and "Book cleaning," etc.

You can add categories and tags in two ways in your posts.

In the first way, hover your mouse cursor on Posts from the sidebar. In the submenu, you will find both Categories and Tag. By clicking on these keys, you can jump into their dedicated screen from where you can add Categories and tags to your posts.

Another way is from a post that you are currently working on. Click on the settings icon from the top right corner. A right menu will appear where you will find both Categories and Tag options.

Managing WordPress Blog Posts

When you successfully create and publish a certain number of posts, you will feel the urge to manage them properly. Otherwise, it will become challenging for you to maintain them. To manage your posts first, go to the Posts screen.

You can see all of your created posts under the title column. Now, if you want to arrange the posts in a certain way, click on the filters below to organize them by date or category.

If you hover over any of these title names, a new small menu will appear just below it. From this menu, you can edit, quick edit, trash, and view posts instantly.

If you want to edit the post, click on the Edit option, which will direct you to the editing screen you clicked.

If you click on the quick edit option, a dropdown menu will appear from where you can add or change certain things without even getting into the post.

All you have to do is add or edit the current text or number and press update.

Removing and Restoring a WordPress Post

Removing a post from your WordPress site is a straightforward task. You have to start from the Posts screen of your WP admin panel. Next, hover over the post you want to delete. Select the Trash option from the newly appeared menu bar.

Clicking the trash button will shift the post to the trash bin. But it will not be removed permanently. You will be able to restore the post.

To restore the post or delete it permanently, go to the top left menu. Here you will find a tab called Trash. By Clicking on it, you will be directed to a new screen where you can see the Trashed posts.

You can click on the Restore button to restore your current trashed post, or you can delete the post forever by hitting the delete permanently button.
