Gutenberg is a new content editor in WordPress that was introduced in version 5.0. It replaces the classic WordPress editor based on a simple text editor. This new editor is designed to make it easier for you to create rich and engaging content without knowing how to code.

The name Gutenberg is inspired by Johannes Gutenberg, who invented the printing press in the 15th century. Similarly, the Gutenberg editor is designed to revolutionize how users create and manage website content.

How Does Gutenberg Work?

The Gutenberg editor is based on a block system, where each page element is a separate block. This allows you to easily create complex layouts and designs without needing to know how to code.

For example, You can add blocks for text, images, videos, buttons, quotes, and more. You can also customize each block with different fonts, colors, and styles to create a unique look and feel for your website.

How to Use the Gutenberg Editor

To utilize Gutenberg, you need to first log in to your WordPress admin dashboard and then proceed to the Page or Post you intend to modify. It can be a new one or it can be a previously created one.

When you open an exact page or post, we assume that it will open automatically in the Gutenberg editor if you use the current WordPress version.

To add a block via this editor, click on the "+" button in the top left-hand corner of the screen or from the right-side corner shown in the image. Pressing this + symbol will open the block library, where you can choose from a range of block types.

Gutenberg offers a range of block types to choose from, including but not limited to:

  • Paragraph blocks for adding text

  • Image blocks for adding images and galleries

  • Video blocks for adding videos from YouTube, Vimeo, and other video platforms

  • Audio blocks for adding audio files

  • Table blocks for creating tables

  • Button blocks for adding buttons with custom links and text

  • Spacer blocks for adding blank spaces to the page

You will be presented with a block library resembling the image below, containing a search bar that enables you to search for the desired block. You can also scroll through the library to locate your required block.

After adding a block, you can customize it by clicking on the block and accessing the menu that appears directly on the block.

These options allow you to change the block's text, image, video, or other content, as well as its alignment, background color, and other settings.

Removing a block from your page or post is also easy. First, click on the block to display the block menu right on top of it. Then, click on the three dots situated in the right corner of the menu. Now scroll down the dropdown menu and choose the "Delete" option.

Alternatively, you can select the block and press the "Delete" key on your keyboard.

When you add various types of blocks to your page or post but have to rearrange them, simply click on the block and press on the arrows that appear on the block menu.

Once you have finished editing your page or post, you can preview it by clicking on the "Preview" button in the top right-hand corner of the screen.

If you are happy with the changes, you can publish the page or post by clicking on the "Publish" button.
