At Rapyd, a website is referred to as an environment. Each environment is automatically assigned a unique domain and IP address, called an Environment Domain. This domain allows your website to be accessed over the internet immediately after creation.

What Is an Environment Domain?

When you create a website (environment) on Rapyd, we generate a default domain for it, structured as follows:

environment-name.ew1.rapydapps.cloud

Here’s a breakdown of the components:

  • environment-name: The name you selected for your environment during creation.

  • ew1: Refers to the region where your website’s server is hosted. This code varies based on the region you choose.

The environment domain gives you instant access to your site, even before linking a custom domain. However, it’s important to note:

  • The environment domain cannot be changed after it’s created.

  • It’s intended for development and setup, not as a long-term public-facing domain.

Where to Find Your Environment Domain

You can view the environment domain for your website in multiple places in the Rapyd dashboard:

  1. Site Management Area > Settings > Domains

  2. Site Management Area > Overview > Production Environment

When to Use an Environment Domain

  • During Development: Access your site immediately after creation, even before a custom domain is set up.

  • Testing and Setup: Use the environment domain to test and configure your site privately.

While the environment domain is a great tool during these stages, you’ll eventually want to link a custom domain for branding and professionalism. For more details, see our guide on How to Set Up a Custom Domain.

Notes About Environment Domains

  • Unchangeable: Once created, the environment domain’s structure cannot be modified.

  • Not Ideal for Public Use: Environment domains are not intended as a long-term solution for public-facing websites.

Conclusion

Environment domains provide immediate access to your website during development, serving as a vital tool for testing and setup. However, transitioning to a custom domain is essential for creating a professional online presence. For more information about custom domains, visit our How to Set Up a Custom Domain guide.
